A single northbound traffic lane
Remove opposing vehicle movements and prevent drivers from turning south from Allen Street to use Upper Prince as a shortcut toward downtown. Keep the lane deliberately narrow, with physical traffic-calming features.
Upper Prince Street · Charlottetown
Make Upper Prince Street northbound only, with a single traffic lane, a raised school crossing, a clearly defined drop-off zone and a dedicated bicycle path.
Children should have a safer way to walk, cycle and arrive at Prince Street School.
A clearer traffic pattern.
A slower school approach.
Children exit on the school side.
Dedicated space to ride.
The proposal
Upper Prince Street is narrow, and it serves a school. I propose redesigning the street around the people who use it every day: children, families, school staff and residents.
Between Euston Street and Allen Street, motor traffic would travel north in one lane. The space would be organised for walking, cycling, school drop-off and a row of parallel parking where it fits safely.
Remove opposing vehicle movements and prevent drivers from turning south from Allen Street to use Upper Prince as a shortcut toward downtown. Keep the lane deliberately narrow, with physical traffic-calming features.
Bring the crossing up on a raised table so drivers must slow as they approach the school. Curb extensions and bollards would define the approach, shorten the crossing and keep parked vehicles away from sightlines.
Provide a designated space at the main entrance where northbound vehicles can unload on the school side. Children would step out toward the school rather than into the traffic lane, with a clear walking route to the entrance.
Create a continuous, physically separated route suitable for cycling in both directions. Keep it distinct from the vehicle lane and coordinate it with sidewalks, the crossing and the drop-off zone.
Safer school arrivals
A drop-off zone needs more than a sign. It needs a layout that makes the safe movement the obvious movement.
From proposal to a working street
I would bring this proposal forward with Prince Street School and the neighbourhood, then have the City measure the street and develop the detailed layout.
That work would settle the crossing location, bicycle-path separation, drop-off arrangements and parking spaces. It would also check traffic speeds and school-time conditions before and after the changes.
This is a proposal for discussion. The final street design and implementation would require City approval and coordination with the school.
